Content streaming is currently the hottest trend in technology, and AT&T wants you to watch your favorite TV episodes and live sporting events on their brand-new tablet designed specifically for entertainment purposes. The powerhouse telecom company has been shifting its focus from communication to entertainment, starting with the acquisition of DirecTV in 2015. The new Android tablet is called “Primetime” and comes with the DirecTV and DirecTV Now apps pre-installed.
As a result of the constant advancements in mobile technology, people can stream their favorite shows and movies wherever they want. AT&T has been capitalizing on the mobile industry for decades, and now, they are hoping to combine their superb mobile technology with their entertainment resources to create the ultimate on-the-go streaming experience.
The “Primetime” tablet comes with a 10-inch display and full 1080p HD resolution. It is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 mobile processor and comes with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. The initial price point for “Primetime” is $200, or $10 per month for 12 months. It can also be added to a current customers’ unlimited mobile plan for $20 per month; however, the cost of the tablet does not include the monthly subscription for DirecTV. AT&T will begin selling their exclusive tablets on Friday, August 25.
Potential Time Warner Merger
AT&T’s plan to take over the mobile entertainment industry is in full swing. It started when they acquired cable TV titan DirecTV in 2015, making them the largest pay-TV company in the country. They began the transition by launching the first subscription-based streaming service with a cable lineup called DirecTV Now in late 2016. Now, they’ve set their sights on prized TV networks and movie studios by proposing a $108.7 billion merger with Time Warner Cable, which could skyrocket AT&T into the entertainment stratosphere.
